Indian Folk Art

                                                               Indian Folk Art

Indian art covers pottery, paintings, carvings, textiles and sculptures. Most of these represent Hindu gods and goddesses, with paintings often depicting people offering their prayers or the gods fighting off evil. These paintings would be created or displayed outside houses as good luck charms and decoration. Many of these paintings also depict nature; rivers, forests, wild animals, hills and flora. As Indian art is largely influenced by culture, it is very important to the heritage of India.

Here are some of my attempts at traditional Indian folk art :

Madhubani :

This painting style originated in the Mithila region of northern India. It depicts a young woman sitting under a tree, while observing a peacock on its branch.

This is what the picture looked like before I painted it. Bright colours are the most important parts of the painting form.

Warli art :
This art style originated in northern Maharashtra, where the daily lives of groups of people would be depicted on walls of houses. Geometrical shapes like triangles, circles and rectangles are frequently used, as well as straight lines to illustrate people. The drawing I've made, shows a group of women doing their chores as the local princess passes by.
